Firstly, I would like to thank the Club for inviting me to judge at this wonderfully run show & a huge thanks to my very efficient stewards. I was delighted with a super entry and thank all exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to judge their dogs on the day. It has been several years since I last judged this variety of the breed when I was a little disappointed with the overall quality. Although numerically a stronger entry today there remains room for improvement with many short ribbed exhibits, some weak underjaws plus roached toplines and many falling away over the croup where hindquarters should be strong and hammy. Shoulders were good in the majority mouths & bites better than before. All my top winners were of a correct size and within the standard for weight. Many exhibits could do with weight off and there were no exhibits excessively thin. Many coats were correct but not well presented. Too many exhibits were too big and rangy, although I used discretion in some cases, many were simply oversized and not fitting breed standard. I appreciate it is a real challenge to breed a true dachshund in miniature, but my stunning winning exhibits prove that this is certainly possible without loss of quality, substance, or type as many top breeders over the decades have proven.
Veteran Dog (1,0)
1st Black’s Ch. Bassodon Westwood - Super well coated & well-constructed exhibit presented in excellent condition. Super hound head. Lovely shoulder placement into good ribbed body with short loin. Enjoying his veteran years for all to see. Showed like a trooper moving true both in front and behind. BVIB
Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)
1st Thorn-Andrews Drakesleat Gud Day Sunshine – Sound all round and of a good size for age, good ribbing and short loin. Great coat and nice head, eye and expression. Moved soundly fore and aft but could hold a better topline on the move – still young and will improve further with maturity.
2nd Hunt’s Earthsea Nighthawk – Another sound dog but of a larger build good outline but not the movement of the winner. Held a better topline but needs to keep its head up on the move.
Puppy Dog (0)
Junior Dog (2,0)
1st Tomsett’s Dajean Oatmeal Cookie – Compact chocolate dapple of a true miniature size whilst still maturing and developing only just out of puppy. Good shoulders and lovely topline into sound hindquarters. Still needs to fill in front but plenty of time and of the correct size to allow for further development.
2nd Ergis’ Captain Tom of Siouxline – Rangier type for me although I really liked his head and correct front. Slightly short in ribbing and topline could be better on the move. Moved correctly fore and aft. Just a bit too much of him.
Yearling Dog (2,0)
1st Tomsett’s Daxilee King of Kool at Dajean – A lovely rich red dog with a super coat and great outline in the stack and free standing. Strong front and nice lay of shoulders. Of correct size with great hindquarters. The only thing that detracted from the whole package was his tail carriage on the move which he held high although it was set correctly.
2nd Ward-Blower’s Whitewebbs Jonny Be Good at Willowmist – nicely balanced and well proportioned clear red dog of a good size. Good front and decent hindquarters however a little unsettled on the move.
Post Graduate Dog (4,1)
1st Daxilee King of Kool at Dajean
2nd Whitewebbs Jonny Be Good at Willowmist
3rd Phillips’ Birichino Barley of Robinswood
Limit Dog (8,1)
Quality class
1st Salisbury’s Pennywave Nosey Parker at Brocklewood – A really nice type with balance and of correct size. Good head and eye, into good reach of neck and flowed into correctly angulated shoulders. Prominent pro sternum and nice depth of keel. Tight elbows, good ribbing and lovely hindquarters held a lovely outline at all times and moved very well. An honest balanced quality dog Res C.C. in strong competition.
2nd Russell’s Russteck Romeo – Another similar type to winner lovely hind angulation providing good drive. Good in front nice tight elbows, preferred winners forechest. Tail set slightly high. Overall a quality exhibit if a little bit too much of him.
3rd Smith’s Alncroft Ivan Inkling
Open Dog (7,1)
Strong class of lovely dogs
1st Russell’s Russteck The Bruce – lovely truly balanced wire in miniature. Lovely type that caught my eye immediately. Super coat, lovely head and eye, correct ear set into nicely arched neck. Correct shoulder arrangement and good front, tight elbows. Good length of ribcage, short loin. Lovely hammy hindquarters moving correctly fore and aft. Showed and handled well. Delighted to award CC
2nd Thorn-Andrews & Billinghurst’s Drakesleat Kumquat May – another correctly sized balanced hound with a beautiful head, eye & expression. Super front and good shoulder construction. Great coat and presented superbly as were all from this exhibitor. Ribbing could have been slightly longer and on the move preferred the outline of the winner but a quality dog.
3rd Tite’s Onitsuka Tiger Vitoraz at Rijobeau (Imp CZE)
Veteran Bitch (1,0)
1st Crow’s Compania Pandora – A nicely balanced if a little portly bitch, still carrying her lockdown conditioning no doubt – like a lot of us! Really nice front and good angles in the shoulders and hindquarters and moved with purpose - true fore and aft and handled well to make the most of her attributes.
Minor Puppy Bitch (4,0)
1st Sextons’ Molloney Noodle Not A Doodle – Lovely youngster of 8 months – smart head and expression strong jaw, great outline, correct front assembly, good sweep of keel, correct ribbing and nicely angled hindquarters. Lovely, elegant neckline into level topline – still very much a baby but will mature into a super girl for sure.
2nd Davies Nostalgia Gilovam At Stardax – Smart 8.5 month baby of good proportions with good balance. Taller type and more ground clearance than ideal but held a good outline on the move. Particularly good hindquarters. Once matured and grown into her frame will do well.
3rd Tomsett’s Dajean Koolers Vision
Puppy Bitch (4,1)
1st West’s Archidax Hocus Pocus - A super well-constructed puppy who caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring. Lovely head and eye, elegant neck and correct coat held a lovely outline at all times and at the start of the class moved out well. On individual examination on moving was completely distracted by an incident ringside. As I had witnessed her correct movement before this had happened and as a clear winner of the class, I was happy to award her the class - fortunately the event did not put her off later when in the challenge and I was delighted to see her regain her confidence and awarded her Best Bitch Puppy And BPIB.
2nd Tomsetts Dajean Russian Doll - Nice compact puppy of a good type an unusual colour but with a correct coat. Not yet settled on the move.
3rd Knights Bargemon Can You Hear Me
Junior Bitch (4,2)
1st Stewart & Tomsett’s Dajean Pinochios Star – A nice youngster just out of puppy. Good front, correct shoulders correctly shaped head with a good eye and expression. Moved with purpose and nothing exaggerated for me a little long in hock.
2nd Tomsett’s Dajean Russian Doll
Yearling Bitch (3,0)
1st Taylor’s Whitewebbs Earth Angel – Red of a lovely honest type without exaggeration. Strong correct pro-sternum good depth and sweep of keel, good hindquarters. Looked lovely on the stack but tended to run up a little behind on the move.
2nd Rankine’s Fallowmill Pumpkin Pie – good type wild boar – Head OK but a little weak in underjaw. Lovely topline but a little long in loin, well angulated behind.
3rd Mills Oniasid Tart Tatin
Post Graduate Bitch (14,3)
1st West Archidax Dark Phoenix – Super smart red with a great coat presented beautifully. Totally balanced with a lovely correctly constructed front assembly, elegant arched neck into a lovely topline held at all times. Great hindquarters used with purpose and drive. A strong winner of a strong class and continued to impress in a very hotly contested challenge. Delighted to award the Res CC
2nd Kirkwood-Emery’s Helydon Nifty Nairn JW – another lovely bitch who caught the eye. Loved the type – balanced with a quality outline. Smart head, eye & expression – great topline just a bit happy with her tail on the move. Preferred the winners hindquarters and length of hock but was a close decision.
3rd Mills Middleton Hunt at Oniasid
Limit Bitch (10,3)
1st Thorn Andrews Drakesleat Drop Dead Gorjus – Loved this bitch from the moment she walked in the ring. Classy, lovely type and presented beautifully. Just my idea of a true miniature version of the standard dachshund. Great flowing hound lines, one of the best heads, strong jawline, great dark eye, super expression. On the stack and free standing a stunning outline super well angulated hindquarters – moved with verve and drive. Delighted to award her CC (her 2nd) & BOB. I hope she gets her 3rd very soon.
2nd Black’s Bassodon Dodecahedron JW – Very smart girl also very nicely presented & lovely to go over – nothing exaggerated and lovely flowing lines – good front assembly, lovely neck and good topline. Strong well-made hindquarters – moved true fore and aft. Just lacked the sparkle of the winner on the move.
3rd Kirkwoods Helydon Magical Mika
Open Bitch (7,1)
1st Thorn Andrews Ch. Drakesleat Too Gud To Be True – Another super exhibit from this breeder and litter sister to my CC & BOB winner. All the same comments apply although in type I felt her sisters outline stacked and on the move to be more to my taste & type having slightly lower and chunky hindquarters. Loved the coat, again a lovely head and beautiful front assembly moved out well and sound fore and aft – this sister is one I would say for the all-rounder – congratulations on two lovely litter sisters.
2nd Dance’s Ch. Emem Summer Sunshine JW – top quality girl and in the same type as my Dog CC winner – correct size full of quality. Good coat which was very well presented. On the stack very impressive with great lines. On the day, I preferred the outline and free movement on the move of the winner. A very worthy champion.
3rd Kirkwood Emery’s Helydon Jinglebells
